Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a blatant abuse of power by all three arms of government. He made this assertion at the annual colloquium organized by the Haske Satumari Foundation in Abuja, where he emphasized that the key actors in Nigeria, including the executive, legislature, and judiciary, know the correct thing to do but are refusing to do it.
Jonathan likened the situation to an Indian proverb, saying that if someone is sleeping, you can easily wake them up, but if they're pretending to sleep, it's difficult to wake them up. He stressed that the abuse of power is clear and cuts across all three arms of government.
The former president expressed concern that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State harms Nigeria's image and undermines democratic institutions. He warned that compromised institutions deter investment and impede economic growth, as investors are wary of environments where judicial rulings may be influenced.
Jonathan emphasized the importance of doing what is right, even if it's painful, to build a nation that future generations can be proud of. He called for a sustained commitment to promoting social change and good governance.
The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was made by President Bola Tinubu, who suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state assembly members for six months. The move has been met with criticism from various quarters, with many arguing that it's an abuse of power and a threat to democracy.
